What You’ll Do

  • First 60-90 days will be spent getting intimately familiar with the Company’s existing products and systems, as well as the markets and applications that are of strategic interest; and understanding current opportunities/challenges in each area
  • Under the leadership and direction of the executive team, develop an extensive portfolio of polymer floor coatings systems (multi layers)
  • Develop new coatings that complement existing portfolio, in order to develop and eventually market more specialty floor coatings systems (multi layers)
  • Ensure that ASTM tests (complete systems and for single products) are carried out in collaboration with staff, by understanding the operation of the equipment used to test yellowing (Sun Test), abrasion, elongation, tension force, impact resistance, coefficient of friction, etc.
  • Clearly communicate instructions, strategies and processes to the professional team, the R&D Director and other employees of the company
  • Play a leading role in the technical development of other members of the department 
  • Ensure a creative R&D environment committed to meeting the very specific needs of installers and users of polymer floors by developing products that make complete systems offering unique properties
  • Ensure continuous improvement of products and testing protocols regarding R&D and QC 
  • Support project teams, communicate and document results, focus resources to meet priorities, and coordinate/align with internal stakeholders as necessary 
  • Ensure liaison with production teams in order to scale up manufacturing from laboratory batches to production batches 
  • Ensure liaison with the procurement department regarding the availability and costs of raw materials considered for new projects and find alternatives to existing projects 
  • Ensure liaison with the sales team and, where applicable, with potential customers as well as existing customers in order to meet their technical needs and better understand their needs 
  • Obtain concrete results while respecting deadlines 
  • Ensure projects are properly documented to maximize eligibility for SR&ED tax credit 
  • Documentation, use and continuous improvement of the ERP system and SOP processes for laboratory-related modules 
  • Monitoring and updating of nomenclature changes and new product launches 
  • Carry out research and product development projects on your own and with the help of technicians 

The Profile

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, polymer science, coatings technology or other related field is REQUIRED. (Advanced degree helpful – but proven successful industry experience is most important)
  • 10+ years of experience in developing concrete floor coatings including meaningful experience with complete systems (multi layers) – you understand their properties and the interactions of the various components of the same system, including use of aggregates    
  • Knowledge and understanding of interactions and performance of raw materials in coating formulations 
  • Enjoy working independently without direct supervision but also as part of a team – you earn and receive the trust of both fellow chemists, technicians and functional leaders
  • Strong technical and project management skills, proven through successful completion of multiple R&D programs. 
  • Knowledge and technical operation of ASTM testing equipment to measure: yellowing (Sun Test), abrasion, elongation, tension force, impact resistance, coefficient of friction, etc.  
  • Knowledge of industry standards relating to laboratory management, including the safe use, storage and disposal of chemicals 
  • Mastery of Office suite software
  • Master software related to production and design, and software specific to laboratory activities
