The HSE-QA Manager is responsible for overseeing health, safety, environmental, and quality assurance programs within a manufacturing or production facility. In the paints, coatings, polymers, and specialty materials industries, this role ensures that operations comply with regulatory standards, internal safety protocols, and quality control measures. At a fundamental level, HSE-QA Managers implement and monitor safety procedures, conduct regular audits, manage incident investigations, and develop corrective action plans. They also establish quality control processes to minimize defects and ensure consistent product performance, working closely with production, engineering, and regulatory teams to maintain high standards. Their role is essential for minimizing risk, reducing waste, improving efficiency, and ensuring that products meet customer expectations and industry regulations.
Beyond the “box checking” a good EHS/QA Manager will also be seen as a vital go-to ensuring both the people and Company stay safe – from both accidents and regulatory issues! Good EHS/QA Managers display exceptional trust-building and influencing skills that enable a safety culture, where employees truly believe the company cares about their safety, and instill good practices as a matter of principle.
Working with outside regulators such as EPA, OSHA etc., is often another important component of the role. Ensuring permits are in place and all regulatory requirements are in compliance is an existential requirement for all businesses in the sector.
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. Certifications such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or ISO 9001 Lead Auditor are often preferred.
Experience: 5–10 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting, with a focus on health, safety, environmental compliance, and quality assurance. Experience in the paints, coatings, polymers, and specialty materials industries is highly valued due to the specific challenges of chemical handling and production processes.
Skills: Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and communication skills. Proven ability to manage cross-functional teams, implement safety and quality protocols, and ensure compliance with industry regulations and internal standards. Good influencing skills are also important, as the cross-functional teams are not direct reports but yet their cooperation is essential.
The salary for an HSE-QA Manager in the paints, coatings, polymers, and specialty materials industries typically ranges from $90,000 to $130,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and company size. Senior-level roles or positions with broader regional or international responsibilities may command higher compensation. Some packages include performance-based bonuses as well. These may be based on company targets and/or on achieving specific targets on initiatives such as safety metrics, emissions, or lower cost waste management.
An effective HSE-QA Manager is crucial for protecting both employees and the company’s bottom line. In the paints, coatings, and specialty materials industries, the handling of hazardous materials and complex production processes creates significant safety and quality challenges. A skilled HSE-QA Manager ensures that the company meets all regulatory requirements while fostering a culture of safety and continuous improvement. By reducing incidents and improving product consistency, they help minimize downtime, prevent costly recalls, and protect the company’s reputation. Hiring the right person for this role not only ensures a safer working environment but also strengthens customer confidence and drives long-term business success.
